It was ruled by Ottoman Empire from 1571 to 1878.after Ottoman Empire, United Kingdom took over the island. The island is really precious for both Greeks and Turks. Somehow the things began to change after world war I. England began to lose his colonies one by one. After that life has changed on the island and each nation said ‘Good-bye’ to peace. Greek Cypriot attacked both Turks and English troops on the island and killed them in cold blood. Here in this essay, you will find the reasons of 1974 peace keeping operation of Turkish army.

The first reason of 1974 peace keeping operation was social issues. Greek Cypriots began to attack Turks on the island and killed lots of them in cold blood, in 1954.lots of Turkish women raped and killed. For instance, the massacre known by all over the world, the Bloody Christmas . In that night 3 children were killed in their bed. They were just 7, 3 and 6 month year old. In addition the pressure on the Turkish society was unbearable. They had to move safer places and their district was surrounded by eoka, the Greek secret organization.

The other reason of 1974 peace keeping operation was strategical issues. As the island has a strategical importance in the region Turkey wants to have the north of the island. Any country who wants to control Mediterranean and middle Middle East should have the island. In addition, Cyrus is very close to turkey. If this island was captured by Greeks it would be a big threat for Turkey. To safe the south shores turkey had to make an operation to island.

The last reason of the 1974 peace keeping operation was political issues. The attacks began in 1954 and from that year to 1974 turkey warned UN and England to take the necessary measures. However they thought turkey was bluffing and stays silence. Secondly Greece army took over the government and didn’t want to negotiate with turkey. They were in political obscurity.

In conclusion, many things forced Turkish army to make a peace keeping operation in 1974.The genocide attempts, abuses of the Turkish Cypriots’ rights and the indifference of the UN were the reasons of this operation. From 1974 to now the island is in peace and no one can spoil this peace.
